Khagna KHIM is a 29 years old ex-beneficiary of a BSDA program back in 2005. She is from Veal Vong Commune in Kampong Cham and is the 4th oF 5 children siblings. When she met BSDA by starting to study English at Angkor School for free, she was student from Preah Sihanouk High school and need some support as her family is very poor. While she studied there, Khagna heard about the Apsara traditional class which she really want to join.
She started learning Apsara dance in 2005 at the early beginning of BSDA establishment. As Khagna worked hard and was motivated, dancing teacher chose her to perform during private weeding, party and other ceremony and was sometimes promoted to train in other NGO which allow her to make some money.
In 2009, she has got support from the “Godparents program” and could continue the University and joined with other short course for improving her knowledge. Combining her second year at University with a new volunteering activity with BSDA as Project Assistance of Mekong Kampuchea Kids project, she kept herself busy and start to see her situation changing for good and to be more confident.
After she get graduated in 2013, she had opportunity to apply a job in Krousar Thmey organization as dancing trainer. She has been selected for her previous experience with BSDA. Now Khagna earns 320$ per month and is able to support herself and her family.
“I am very thankful for the knowledge and help i got from BSDA and also grateful for the financial support and care of my Godparent that allowed me to study. You changed my life! I wish you to continue to develop your organization and be able to help more vulnerable people”.
On behalf of ex-students of Apsara she would like to address a message to the young generation: “Please try to study hard, and keep focus on learning skill, don’t waste your time, take everything that BSDA offer, it possibly changes your future. I believe that all of you can do it!”.
