The restaurant
The Smile restaurant is a non-profit training facility run by the BSDA. The aim of the project is to teach orphans and vulnerable children a trade, thus giving them a chance on the job market while also providing them with a safe place to live and a community of peers. Currently, the students are trained in cooking, table serving, English and basic restaurant management for two years and will subsequently be assisted in finding jobs to support themselves. Another goal of the project is to inform visitors about the hardships our target group endures in present day Cambodia and enable them to contribute.
The Smile was established in August of 2009 and has gone a long way since. By now, the restaurant is completely self-reliant, able to provide food and housing to the trainees and even finances a new orphanage and vocational training center for the participants of the MKK project. With it’s great view of the Mekong River, the free wireless and the relaxed atmosphere, the restaurant has quickly become a hang out spot for locals, expats and tourists alike.
