Agriculture and livelihood: Single Women project

Project background

This project is geared to a Courage-project in Central Vietnam’s countryside. The feasibility of the project is confirmed by two years successfully realization in Vietnam.

The Concern of the NGO is it to give to the single women and their children a financial basic of live resources.

The high quantity of single women in the provincial society, who has to live in poverty, is very high caused by the time under the control of the Khmer Rouge.

Target group

Poor, single women in the countryside (unmarried, divorced, widowed)

Goals (long dated and ideal goals)

The struggle for the equality of man and women is difficult and longsome; in the whole world and in Kampuchea too. Courage e.V. wants to contribute its part, by supporting of the self-confidence of the women. The NGO wants to enable the women to demonstrate for their rights more and more in the public.

Objectives (concrete goals)

There is only one but a very existential goal: to escape their poverty and their hopelessness. A chance is given to the women to create a financial independent live by their own.

Activities

Selection of the ten project members

Preconditions for choosing as project member are:

  • Head of a household
  • The women are able to use land for pigsty and cultivation of forage crops
  • Willpower to use this chance (the importance of this point is not to be sneezed.)

The tutor has to instruct the women about:

  • Common conditions for piggery
  • Construction of pigsties
  • Food and its preparation for pigs
  • Hygienic standards in an pigsty
  • Reaction and treatments in case of pig diseases
  • pig breeding

Choise of the kind of piggery

Piggery is possible in two ways. Which one the women will choose depends on their intensions and the real conditions.

  • Pig Breeding: The women feed up their first three piglets, sell only two and keep one female pig as sow for breeding.
  • Pig Rearing:The women get three piglets. After feeding they sell their three now adult fed up pigs and buy new piglets for the next turn.

The time frame until the women can work independent is only three month. In the next six month the controlling will help, motivate and control the women. To stabilize their intension to stay in the project is very important after the women sold their first pigs.

In the next six month the women get visited regularly, in order to give support or to motivate. The experiences have shown, the success of the project depends in a high degree of from their motivation in this time.

Three time per year the women can sell their adult pigs and buy new piglets. The better variant is to combine to feeding and breeding.

Expected results

We would estimate as success when after one year more the 50% of the women will still busy with piggery.

  • Only in the case when a piglet died through no fault of the women’s own Courage will replace the died piglets.
  • A member of BSDA will weekly control and report continuously. After the first selling is a monthly control sufficient in order to exert our influence.
  • A least the success of the project in readable how many time the women can follow the cycle of buy and sell.
